What is an effective way to teach tools of persuasion to middle schoolers?

I teach 7th and 8th graders that cannot grasp the concept of tabloid thinking, card stacking, etc. However, the bandwagon type is an easy one for them. Persuasion they understand, but the type used in advertisements - they can't relate.
