How were the mongols civilized and how were they barbaric?

I am trying to make a sculpture that shows both the mongols as civilized and barbaric, but more to the barbaric side. My sculpture should answer the question "were the mongols more of a fierce group of barbarians or more of a fierce civilization?" My project is due on June 1st 2011, so please help!!
