Why are non-muslims considered "unclean"?

I am not a muslim. I live a peaceful life and I contribute to my society. Why am I considered unclean by Muslims. It just seems to me that unless I am a Muslim, I will always be looked down on by Muslims. I can't understand why a religion would preach this hatred. It seems worse than a tabloid newspaper
