Is "G" a terribly inappropriate rating for "Little House on the Prairie"?

I agree with you. On first seeing your question (i.e., without reading the details), my first thought was that the "G" rating is fine until you get to the last couple of seasons that have storylines about things like drug abuse, arson, rape, and domestic violence. Whoever assigns the TV ratings needs to scrutinize those later seasons more closely!
